Support for a Family Facing a Rare and Aggressive Brain Tumor

When Nathan began experiencing double vision and balance problems, his family never expected a brain stem tumor diagnosis. As they faced emergency surgery and complex treatment decisions, Brain Tumor Network provided steady guidance and reassurance during an overwhelming time.

In December 2024, Nathan was admitted to the ICU after weeks of double vision and balance issues. Doctors discovered a tumor in his brain stem with dangerous fluid buildup causing pressure.

He underwent emergency surgery to relieve the pressure, and a biopsy later confirmed a high-grade astrocytoma with piloid features, an aggressive and inoperable tumor linked to his underlying condition, Neurofibromatosis Type 1.

In the months that followed, Nathan completed seven weeks of radiation along with chemotherapy and Avastin infusions. He now has a permanent shunt to manage fluid buildup and lives with facial paralysis on the right side of his face. The emotional weight of the diagnosis and ongoing treatment has been difficult for Nathan and his family.

During this overwhelming time, Nathan’s mother reached out to Brain Tumor Network. She was quickly connected with a navigator who brought clarity and peace of mind when everything felt uncertain.

Her navigator provided information about potential clinical trials and guidance on DNA profile testing to discuss with Nathan’s doctors.

Complex medical details were explained in clear, understandable language. Questions were answered promptly, and monthly check-ins continue to provide reassurance as Nathan undergoes MRIs and treatment.

Thank you for the continued support, guidance, and compassion you’ve shown our family. It truly means more than words can express, and it’s clear how much you genuinely care. That support has helped carry us through some very difficult days.

Now one year later, Nathan and his family are taking things one day at a time, leaning on prayer, hope, and continued support. Brain Tumor Network remains beside them as they navigate each step forward.
