When Miranda, a joyful 23-year-old, suddenly collapsed with a seizure while playing music at church, her family’s world changed in an instant. A CT scan revealed a tumor in the front part of her brain, and she was transferred to a university hospital for urgent surgery. The procedure confirmed a grade 3 anaplastic astrocytoma. Despite a successful resection, her medical team explained that recurrence was possible, and treatment would include chemotherapy and radiation.
As Miranda began treatment, side effects and complications mounted. Her family struggled to find clear answers and felt overwhelmed by conflicting medical information. In search of guidance, her aunt reached out to Brain Tumor Network and was met with understanding, compassion, and practical help.
BTN provided education about Miranda’s diagnosis and treatment options, and her navigator helped the family prepare questions for doctors and anticipate what might come next. When emotions ran high, BTN offered steady encouragement and a message of hope.
Our Navigator knew exactly my thoughts, my worries, and my concerns. She was truly an answer to our prayers.
Though Miranda passed away after three years of courageous treatment, her family remains deeply grateful for BTN’s role in helping them navigate the most challenging moments. They hold close the lessons she left behind: to be strong, be brave, and never lose hope.
