A Marine’s Strength Meets Compassionate Navigation

By the time Carl reached out to BTN, he was carrying years of combat injury, seizures, and now a brain tumor. Our role was to bring clarity to a very complicated story.

A person in a dark uniform with white gloves holds a small American flag behind their back.

Carl, a U.S. Marine combat veteran, sustained a severe brain injury in 2005 when his vehicle was struck and overturned in combat. After emergency surgery to save his life, he lived for years managing the long-term effects of that injury, including a seizure disorder that gradually worsened. For a long time, doctors believed his symptoms were linked to the old injury—until an MRI revealed a 9-centimeter mass in his right frontal lobe.

A biopsy confirmed a Grade 2 oligodendroglioma. Soon after, Carl underwent a successful tumor resection, with only a small portion left near the corpus callosum due to its location. His treatment continued with 30 consecutive days of radiation followed by PCV chemotherapy. When Carl connected with Brain Tumor Network, he found clarity and coordination at a time when he needed it most. BTN’s navigation team helped him understand his diagnosis, organize his medical records, and explore treatment and follow-up options specific to his history as a veteran and long-term survivor of brain injury. The personalized guidance helped him feel informed and supported through each step of care.

Today, Carl continues to embody the strength and determination that define his Marine spirit. With guidance from Brain Tumor Network, he has moved forward with confidence and focus, applying the same courage that served him in combat to his recovery and life beyond diagnosis.
